As soon as the meal ended, before the elders could even rise, Arzoo pushed her chair back. The sound of wood scraping harshly against the marble echoed like a gunshot. Without a word of excuse, she bolted. She gathered the heavy folds of her dress and ran toward the staircase, her silhouette disappearing into the shadows of the upper hallway like a frightened bird.
